The Milwaukee Bucks suffered an 18-point loss to the San Antonio Spurs last week, having three days of rest before their next contest after reaching the halfway point with a 17-24 record. A disappointing start to the season, there still awaits half a season ahead of the Bucks to turn things around.
On Monday night, they started heading in the right direction, securing a 112-110 win over the Atlanta Hawks, with Giannis Antetokounmpo looking like the star he is with 21 points and 17 rebounds in the victory. It wasn't an easy contest, with the Bucks holding off a late comeback attempt, but they got the job done.
Matching up against a team he spent eight years as a player, Doc Rivers was able to secure the win against the Hawks with his son, Austin, on the broadcast. After the game, Rivers addresses what he thought of the game with the highs and lows.
"I thought it was great execution. We had a bad defensive [performance], two really, helping on Daniels...But offensively, we ran exactly what we wanted to run, and we got exactly what we're looking for," Rivers said.
Milwaukee finished the game shooting 49% from the field and 44% from three-point range, with Bobby Portis (19 points), AJ Green (18 points), and Myles Turner (14 points) having good games offensively.
"We had the stretch mid-fourth where we couldn't score. I thought we went away from what we were doing. Then, when we went right back to it, we got everything we wanted," he added.
Additionally, the Bucks made a big change to their rotation, subbing in Kyle Kuzma to the starting lineup ahead of Kevin Porter Jr., who came off the bench for the first time this season. Kuzma finished the game with 10 points and was -16, while Porter Jr. stuffed the stat sheet and was a +3.
When asked about the change in the lineup, Rivers was non-committal about whether it would be a long-term move for the Bucks. Of course, plus-minus numbers don't tell the story, but it'll be hard to justify keeping Kuzma in the starting lineup if his plus-minus numbers are poor compared to the other starters.
Hopefully the break gave the Bucks some much-needed rest and allowed them to get healthy, and they'll return to action on Wednesday when the Oklahoma City Thunder comes to Milwaukee for their first meeting of the season. Tip-off on Wednesday between the Bucks and Thunder is set for 9:30 p.m. EST.
