Since the start of the 2020s, a different team has won the NBA Finals every season, with the Los Angeles Lakers kicking things off in the NBA Bubble in 2020 and the Oklahoma City Thunder being the reigning NBA Champions. Of all six unique NBA champions, only one of them isn't a playoff team this season: the Milwaukee Bucks.
There's no doubt the Bucks have changed since that 2021 NBA Finals victory, losing key players like Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday, and Brook Lopez. At the core, the Bucks still have their top player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, but haven't had him on the court enough this season.
As Giannis remains sidelined with a calf injury for several weeks, he watched the Bucks suffer a brutal 107-79 loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday, the worst offensive performance of the season from Doc Rivers' group.
Ryan Rollins and Kyle Kuzma were the only two players to score double-digits, with Rollins having a strong performance with 25 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. However, even if one player plays well, it seems as though the Bucks have struggled to get their players going on the same night.
After the loss, head coach Doc Rivers was asked about the team's inconsistency, as they truly haven't been able to find their footing this season.
"Yeah, we're struggling, but we've been on and off. We have not had a rhythm, in my opinion, the whole year. We've had, win two games, win one. We had the one where we won six out of nine; that was our only stretch. Other than that, this is what we've been doing. We just gotta keep working at it," Rivers said.
Unfortunately, the only thing the Bucks have done consistently this season is lose, dropping to an 18-29 record with the loss on Sunday, falling further behind the Charlotte Hornets, who control the 11th seed.
Milwaukee's best stretch recently came from December 27t to January 4th, where they went 4-1, with all four of those wins coming against below-average competition. A win is still a win, but the Bucks just haven't been able to string together enough wins against quality opponents to build up confidence.
Looking ahead for Milwaukee, all the attention will be on them in the next couple of days with the February 5th trade deadline. Whether or not Giannis is traded, rumors will circle this team as they try to navigate a three-game homestand in the middle of all this.
