The Milwaukee Bucks suffered a lopsided 122-94 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday to fall to 24-31 on the year.
After the half, Milwaukee trimmed the deficit to three points, but that was as close as the Bucks would get as Toronto extended its lead to as many as 31 points before the end of the game.
After the loss, Bucks coach Doc Rivers was very candid.
“We got manhandled,” Rivers said. “Bottom line, we just did. I probably have said that one other time this year, but I thought their physicality completely took us out of the game.”
Milwaukee was able to win the rebounding battle, 46-45, but the Raptors dominated in terms of facilitation, totaling 34 assists to the Bucks’ 18. Toronto also utilized its defensive prowess to rack up 11 steals, further stifling Milwaukee’s ball movement.
“I thought it turned us into one-on-one players,” Rivers added. “We stopped moving the ball; playing the way we've been. I mean, when you look at our assist column, you see all those ones. It tells you all you need to know, right?”
Bucks guard Kevin Porter Jr. Logged 10 assists in the loss, but none of his teammates who touched the floor had more than two.
“You know, it's a good lesson for us,” Rivers said. “Especially for our young guards. You know, they got into them. And then instead of just playing right and playing the same way, it made them go one-on-one back at them.
“And the game turned into a one-on-one game. We're just not good enough to play that way.”
Additionally, the Raptors beat the Bucks in paint points (46-42), second chance points (21-11), and fastbreak points (15-8).
“So again, you know, I thought our spirit got taken away with the way they play. And then everything else bled from there.”
Porter Jr. Believes that when the Raptors began to hit their shots, it affected Milwaukee’s defense.
“It kind of influenced our defensive intensity,” Porter said after posting 21 points on a 72.7% clip from the field to go along with his 10 assists. “And we can't have those lapses. We've been working hard.”
After facing the Raptors’ fifth-ranked scoring defense, the Bucks’ next game will come against the Miami Heat on Tuesday, with Miami possessing the fifth-ranked defense in field goal percentage.
“Yeah, I mean, this is the type of game that we needed going into the next one,” Porter said. “Like I said, high-intense team tonight. They got the better of us.
“We're going to get better from it. And we're going to bring the intensity Tuesday.”
