The Milwaukee Bucks have at times been a deeply dysfunctional team and without Giannis Antetokounmpo on the court they've seemed scattered and lost.
Head coach Doc Rivers has stressed connectivity, ball movement and adherence to the game plan over and over again this season and while it hasn't always shown up, the Bucks' recent-streak may be the result of Rivers' result finally paying off.
The Bucks' most recent triumph was a 139-118 win over the New Orleans Pelicans and it was the best example of the growth that the Bucks have shown over the course of their three-straight wins.
New Orleans Pelicans guard Jeremiah Fears (0) knocks the ball from Milwaukee Bucks guard/forward Kevin Porter Jr. (7) during the second half at Smoothie King Center. Stephen Lew-Imagn Images"When we're moving the ball, playing with each other, the ball's finding the right guy, I think our guy's are starting to recognize matchups, so they're hunting matchups and then spacing and making the right play. It's fantastic," Rivers said (via Bucks).
Not only did the Bucks massively outscore the Pelicans and do it in an efficient way with 60% shooting from the field, they outmatched New Orleans when it came to assists, evidence of the Bucks' increased ball movement.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Cam Thomas (24) dribbles against New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson (1) during the first half at Smoothie King Center. Stephen Lew-Imagn ImagesThe Bucks had 28 assists to just 22 by the Pelicans and while that did result in 15 turnovers for Milwaukee, Rivers would likely take those turnovers if it meant that the Bucks offense could step up another level.
How efficient the Bucks were against the Pelicans is proof of Rivers' concept that finding the right matchups makes all the difference. The Bucks haver certainly been over-reliant on the efforts of Antetokounmpo to draw the attention of the defense and coordinate the offense, meaning without him the Bucks haven't had a system.
Moving the ball creates a more dynamic offense and it incorporates the rest of the team into the offensive scheme, which in turn allows the rest of the talent on the roster to shine.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Cam Thomas (24) dribbles against the New Orleans Pelicans during the first half at Smoothie King Center. Stephen Lew-Imagn ImagesRyan Rollins and Cam Thomas. led the way in that regard with 27 points each, but it was truly a whole team effort.
Seven Bucks in total scored in the double digits against New Orleans, with three 20+ point performances in total.
If used correctly, the Bucks do have solid roster with the potential to take over games, they just haven't worked to incorporate that entire roster into the game nearly as much throughout this season.
The kind of fluidity and teamwork that the Bucks used against the Pelicans is exactly the sort of change that's needed to shake up the roster and bring them back to success.
The test now is to see if the Bucks can not only keep up that whole team effort, but incorporate Antetokounmpo into it well once the Greek star returns from injury.
