NBA referees come under scrutiny after every game from fans who believe their team doesn't benefit enough from calls that are made.
As a star player and one of the most physical forces in the league, Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the toughest players to properly referee.
Speaking to reporters after a loss to the Warriors, Giannis was asked about his relationship with the refs and if he was frustrated they wouldn't review a hard foul by Draymond Green.
"I really believe that the referees are human and they're gonna miss plays. And it's okay. I don't think I'm one of the guys that complains a lot or show a lot of emotions when the play doesn't go my way. Obviously, everybody have eyes and they have their opinions of what that play was, and how they've officiated the last couple of years, not just this season. But at the end of the day, again, as I said, they're human, they're gonna miss plays. But I think the most important thing is that the player and referee relationship, which coming from Greece, I believed I saw it on TV," said Giannis.
Giannis referenced the relationship other stars have had with the referees and how they talked to the refs.
"I saw when Allen Iverson, when Michael Jordan, when Kobe Bryant, when Shaq, when all these all-time greats approach the referees and have a conversation. What they thought it was and they feel comfortable doing that. And I feel like sometimes when there's a player that doesn't show a lot of emotion, and plays the right way, doesn't complain.
"If I get hit and I approach the referee and I say, 'Hey, I think you should review that.' Look, I don't want to impose my will to the game because I'm not the type of a guy that will yell, yell because you see a lot of players, they yell, yell, yell, yell, yell, and then they just get down to it. When I yell, it's almost like they're like surprised and give me a tech," he said.
Much like Giannis; Jordan, Iverson, Kobe, and Shaq were four of the most physical players during their time, often drawing contact and forcing referees to make a call.
Knowing the referees are human, Giannis has taken a respectful approach to his conversations with them.
"I think we just gotta keep on growing upon that player and referee relationship, like when I approach the referee or when they approach me and they say, 'Giannis, you gotta hurry up on your free throw. Your free throw routine, it takes too long.' I'm like, 'I appreciate you. I'll try to do my best.'
"And I feel like sometimes when I get hit, and I approach a referee, and I say, 'Hey, I think I got hit in my face. I think you should review that.' Sometimes maybe they should review it, it takes five seconds. It doesn't disrupt the game at all, I think, and especially in a play like that."
Against the Warriors, Giannis contended he was hit in the face by Draymond Green and was asking for the play to be reviewed for a flagrant.
Giannis is second in the league in fouls drawn per game behind only Luka Doncic as 8 fouls drawn.
