Giannis Antetokounmpo Receives Positive Injury Update cover image

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo seems to have avoided the worst with good news from his calf MRI.

Milwaukee Bucks fans suffered a scary sight during Monday night's game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers: no Giannis Antetokounmpo in the second half.

The Bucks superstar suffered a left groin strain during the second quarter of that game and did not return to the game. The outlook was bleak, at least from Milwaukee had coach Doc Rivers' perspective.

"Didn't look great, I can tell you that," Rivers said (via ESPN). "We'll know more tomorrow."

Giannis Antetokounmpo Injury Update

Antetokounmpo underwent an MRI on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the damage to his calf, but received positive results as it was simply a strain that will keep him out one-two weeks.

Antetokounmpo has been having one of the best seasons in his already dominant career. He's averaging 31.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game. The Bucks have had a middling 8-7 start to the season, but the majority of their success has rested on the back of Antetokounmpo's performance.

In the last three Milwaukee games, in which the Bucks went 2-1, Antetokounmpo led the team in points, assists, and rebounds.

The Bucks haven't had to play without him often, but when they have, their record is 1-1, including Monday night's game.

While their star player's absence doesn't appear to be an extended one, Milwaukee still needs to prepare to play without him.

"We got some work to do," Rivers said. "There's always a silver lining. ... I don't know what it is. It doesn't look good right now. If we got [Kevin Porter Jr.] out and Giannis out, that's not great for our team, but we're going to either find somebody or find something to run that will pay dividends later. And that's the stretch that we're about to go through. We'll be ready."

Likely players to step out with Antetokounmpo out will be Bobby Portis and Amir Coffey, who slot in behind Antetokounmpo at power forward on the Milwaukee depth chart.

Anetotkounmpo's health will be of paramount importance to the Bucks, especially so early in the season, so the last thing Milwaukee will want to do will be to rush him back. A calf strain, even a minor one at this point, can progress to a dreaded Achilles injury, a situation that Anthony Davis of the Dallas Mavericks is trying to avoid while rehabbing his own calf strain.

For now, Antetokounmpo will have to watch from the sidelines while Milwaukee devises how to play without him.
