Things are heating up between the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

It's been a rocky season for the Milwaukee Bucks as they are going to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16.

Not only did they fall below expectations on the court, but problems also arose between franchise legend Giannis Antetokounmpo and the organization off the court.

The team waived and stretched the contract of Damian Lillard following an Achilles injury that would keep him out for the season, leading to trade rumors swirling and fans speculating on the future of Giannis.

Milwaukee added Myles Turner to show they were serious about competing, but injuries to Giannis and the team failing to build a consistent identity dropped them further down the standings.

No trade materialized despite heavy rumors at the deadline, and Giannis suffered a knee injury on March 15, effectively putting an end to any potential playoff push.

What's Going On With Giannis?

Speaking to Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Giannis gave insight into his situation.

“You know who you are dealing with,” Antetokounmpo said. “So for somebody to come and tell me to not play or not to compete, it’s like a slap in my face. So, I don’t know where the relationship goes from there.”

He continued, “I’ve never seen a case of a player saying, my caliber of player, that’s like — I’m saying it publicly — I want to f—ing play. You know what I’m saying? I don’t think I’ve seen this. So, if there needs to be an investigation, great. There should be. I don’t know. There should be. Until we figure something out."

Giannis was set to be reevaluated in one week from March 17, but the team has given no further update.

“I’m available to play, but I’m not in the game,” Antetokounmpo said. “I’m available to play today. Right now. I’m available. Do I look like I’m not available? … I don’t see myself in the first 12. I don’t see myself in the starting lineup. I don’t know what game is being played right here, I just don’t wanna be a part of it.”

Is There Any Hope?

Based on Giannis' own words, it appears he and the Bucks are headed for a split in the offseason. The New York Knicks reportedly had an offer for Giannis this past offseason, but a deal never got over the finish line. There were reportedly a number of suitors lined up at the trade deadline, but the Bucks held firm.

With Giannis growing frustrated with the organization, a trade this offseason feels more likely than ever. Teams that may have disappointed in the playoffs might be more willing to up their offer and new teams could emerge.

With their playoff hopes dashed, the Bucks have no reason to try and win games, feeling they are better off evaluating young players and increasing their lottery odds. A sound theory, but perhaps not at the expense of the most decorated star in franchise history.

The Bucks have not commented on Giannis' injury status and it is unknown if he will end up playing another game this season or for the Bucks ever again.
