Giannis Antetokounmpo's new jersey number represents more than a fresh start—it honors the franchise that helped shape his legendary career.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is beginning a new chapter with the Miami Heat, but he made it clear he isn't leaving behind the legacy he built with the Milwaukee Bucks.
After wearing No. 34 throughout his 13 seasons in Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo revealed that he will wear No. 7 with Miami.
While many expected the superstar to continue wearing the number that became synonymous with his rise to NBA greatness, Giannis explained that the decision was made out of respect for the organization that drafted him.
"The reason that I really changed my number is because I feel like 34 holds so much weight and has so much history, and out of respect to the organization that drafted me and I played for for 13 years, I decided to leave that number there and try to start a new chapter," Antetokounmpo said.
His comments quickly resonated with fans, offering a glimpse into how much his time in Milwaukee still means despite his move to South Beach.
A Number That Defined a Legacy
Selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Antetokounmpo developed into the face of the Bucks franchise and one of the NBA's most accomplished players.
During his time in Milwaukee, he earned 10 All-Star selections, nine All-NBA honors, five All-Defensive Team selections, two NBA Most Valuable Player awards, the 2020 Defensive Player of the Year Award, the 2021 NBA Finals MVP and led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship.
His remarkable career also earned him a place on the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
Even in what became his final season with Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo remained one of the league's elite players.
He averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists while shooting an outstanding 62.4% from the field in 36 games. For his career, he leaves the Bucks averaging 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists across 895 regular-season games.
Those accomplishments made No. 34 more than just a jersey number—it became a symbol of one of the greatest eras in Bucks history.
You can bet nobody will ever wear that number again in Bucks history.
A Fresh Start in Miami
Rather than carrying that history to another franchise, Antetokounmpo decided it should remain in Milwaukee.
His decision reflects the appreciation he has for the organization that believed in him as a teenager from Greece.
Now wearing No. 7, Antetokounmpo begins a new challenge with the Heat, who are hoping his arrival immediately puts them back into championship contention.
While expectations in Miami will be enormous, Giannis made it clear he isn't trying to erase or replace what he accomplished with the Bucks.
Instead, he's honoring it.
By leaving No. 34 behind, Antetokounmpo ensured that the number will forever be associated with the memories, championships and milestones he created in Milwaukee.
