These next several years after trading Giannis will be crucial to the franchise.

It's no secret that after trading former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks are now in complete rebuild mode. The Bucks have centered their roster around youth in the 2026 offseason, letting veteran pieces walk in free agency while continuing to collect assets to help them in the future.

In the Giannis trade with the Miami Heat, the Bucks got back Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel'el Ware, two players who can find themselves a long-term future in Milwaukee. Milwaukee also had two picks in the lottery in this year's draft, selecting Brayden Burries and Nate Ament with the 10th and 13th overall picks.

Bucks GM Jon Horst is keeping a very honest approach as the franchise enters a new era without Giannis. Horst mentioned to the media that this move was best for both parties, and this next era is one that will require patience to get back to where they once were.

"We're going to focus on those things each day, so that's the lens that we look through more than winning and losing out of the gate," Horst said.

"So finding that right north star, having the right approach in staying focused and true to that and the patience to do it I think is the way we're going to get there. But it's a different era for us, so we'll learn as we go."

One interesting part of that quote was where Horst mentioned finding the right "north star." Milwaukee is brand new to its rebuilding phase, and they don't have one clear piece that they're ready to build around.

It's also clear that Milwaukee isn't too worried about how many games the team wins or loses for at least next season. This is a roster that is completely brand new, and most of them have never been on the same team as one another.

How Should Milwaukee Approach 2026?

With all the new pieces being brought in, this could be a tough season on the court for the Bucks, but it will be important to watch the development of four key players.

The rookies Brayden Burries and Nate Ament will have a chance to prove themselves as players Milwaukee can build around for years to come. Big rookie seasons from them could instill confidence in the front office moving forward.

There are also two players from the Heat in Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel'el Ware, who could be in for big seasons after coming off solid individual seasons. The Bucks must recognize what they have in their possession and not look too far ahead into the future, a mistake some teams make as they enter a rebuild.
