Not every team needs Giannis to sign an extension.
There are a number of factors at play when it comes to a possible Giannis Antetokounmpo trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for any team that may be interested, with the biggest factor at play being how long they'll actually be able to keep him.
Even if Antetokounmpo is traded, he'll have a player option for the 2026-27 season and will be a universal free agent the season after that even if he does pick up his option.
Considering how much trading for Antetokounmpo would cost for any team, seeing him leave just a season or two later would be a nightmare scenario for anywhere that he lands and if Anteokounmpo ends up in a destination that he isn't happy with or doesn't feel like will contend soon, that may be exactly what happens.

Portland Taking A Risk
That may be the strategy for most teams, but clearly there's at least one prospective suitor that isn't worried about that issue.
A recent report from ESPN's Shams Charania indicates that the Portland Trail Blazers would still be interested in trading for Antetokounmpo even if he wouldn't commit to an extension right away.
Antetokounmpo landing in Oregon would certainly be interesting. It would it be a reunion between Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, going back to the time that Lillard was briefly traded to the Milwaukee Bucks as well as his longtime former teammate Jrue Holiday.
Trail Blazers With Giannis
Portland's willingness to still go after Antetokounmpo even without the assurance of an extension is even more interesting, though. It';s a major indication of the Trail Blazers' mentality at this point and their perspective on their place in the Western Conference.

That triumphant late season effort has clearly emboldened the team and shifted their perspective on their playoff chances and with Lillard in the latter half of his career at this point, the organization may be feeling the pressure to enter "win now" mode and taking a stab at Antetokounmpo is one of the best ways to do that.
