Tyler Herro Brushes Off Contract Talks After Trade to Bucks

Tyler Herro is not allowing an uncertain contract situation to overshadow the beginning of his new chapter with his hometown team.

The Milwaukee Bucks guard told reporters Saturday at his youth basketball camp in New Berlin, Wisconsin, that his focus remains on basketball after arriving in the blockbuster trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat.

“I’m not really worried about it right now,” Herro said, according to The Associated Press. “It’s a new slate for me, for the coaches, really for the organization as a whole. I don’t think that needs to be a burden over anyone’s shoulders.”

Herro has one season remaining on his contract. Without an extension, the 26-year-old could become an unrestricted free agent following the 2026-27 season.

The trade brought Herro back to the Milwaukee area, where he attended Whitnall High School in Greenfield before playing one season at Kentucky.

Herro spent the first seven seasons of his NBA career with Miami, earning Sixth Man of the Year honors in 2022 and his first All-Star selection in 2025. He has averaged more than 20 points in five consecutive seasons, although injuries limited him to 33 games last season.

Now he joins a franchise, beginning a new era after trading the most accomplished player in its history.

Milwaukee received Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakučionis and draft capital in the Antetokounmpo deal. The return included the rights to Nate Ament, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA draft.

The Bucks also selected Arizona guard Brayden Burries with the 10th overall pick, adding him to a backcourt that includes Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins.

Milwaukee is coming off a 32-50 season that ended its run of nine consecutive playoff appearances. Former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins will take over an overhauled roster facing reduced expectations without Antetokounmpo.

Herro believes that skepticism can motivate the Bucks.

“I probably have the biggest chip on my shoulder that I’ve had in my career, coming to Milwaukee,” Herro said. “We’ve been through a lot.”

Although the roster may need time to establish roles, Herro should immediately become one of Milwaukee’s primary scorers and creators. His production this season also will play a significant role in determining his next contract.

Herro grew up following Bucks players such as Michael Redd, Andrew Bogut, Brandon Jennings and T.J. Ford, who is now an assistant on Jenkins’ staff.

That history adds personal significance to Herro’s return, but the Bucks must decide whether he is a long-term centerpiece or a valuable veteran on an expiring contract.

For now, Herro is treating the uncertainty as a secondary concern. His priority is helping Milwaukee establish its identity after one of the most consequential trades in franchise history.
