Could Jaren Duren end up on the Milwaukee Bucks
The Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren are at an impasse as the Pistons have been unable to reach a new deal with the restricted free agent.
Duren is coming off an All-Star season where he averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2 assists on 65% shooting from the field. He had a disappointing playoff run, averaging 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists on 51% shooting.
He was reportedly offered a five-year, $200 million deal, but has not accepted.
He reportedly has interest from other teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks.
Sam Amick of The Athletic reports that the Sacramento Kings and Bucks are two teams with their eyes on Duren, whether they make a run at him this offseason or next offseason, when he could be an unrestricted free agent if he accepts his qualifying offer.
Adding To The Core
After trading away Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks have a young core that includes Ryan Rollins, Nate Ament, and Brayden Burries.
Rollins is 24, while Burries, 21, and Ament, 20, are both rookies. They also have Ousmane Dieng, 23, Kasparas Jakucionis, 20, and Kel’el Ware, 22.
Jaime Jaquez Jr is only 25, but he’s a restricted free agent, and his next deal might prove to be a little too rich, especially if they trade for Duren and have to pay Rollins, though they could move off of Kyle Kuzma and Tyler Herro in the offseason, as both will be unrestricted free agents.
Ken Blaze-Imagn ImagesDuren will turn 23 in November, putting him on the same timeline as the rest of the Bucks core.
They won’t be expected to compete this season, and maybe not even next year, but two years from now they would have to be perennial playoff contenders.
Worth It For Milwaukee?
There would have to be a strong belief in that core because they don’t have their own first-round pick until 2031.
They’d have to give up one, probably two, maybe even three first-round picks to get Duren, as they’d also be getting off Myles Turner’s deal. If you’re confident that your new core will have you consistently in the playoffs by 2031, dealing those picks becomes easier to swallow.
If you’re not sold on a core of Duren, Rollins, Burries, and Ament, or worse, if you are sold and they end up underperforming and not panning out, you’re once again mortgaging your future for a team that isn’t competitive.
Milwaukee just did this with the Damian Lillard trade, which was a worthwhile risk that didn’t pan out; would they be willing to make an even riskier move with no Giannis trade to fall back on?
