Milwaukee assembled an intriguing roster following the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, but it still lacks a proven lead playmaker.
The Milwaukee Bucks have no shortage of talent entering the 2026-27 season. What they do not have is an established player capable of consistently organizing that talent.
Milwaukee completely reshaped its roster by trading Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. The return gave the Bucks Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis and rookie Nate Ament, along with significant draft capital.
The Bucks also have Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma, Gary Trent Jr., AJ Green and Caris LeVert. It is a roster filled with scoring, shooting and intriguing young players.

Plenty of scorers, few organizers
Herro should be Milwaukee’s leading scorer, but asking him to carry the entire offensive creation burden would not maximize his game. He is most dangerous when he can move without the ball, attack rotating defenders and work alongside another playmaker.
LeVert and Kuzma can create shots, but neither is a traditional point guard. Kevin Porter Jr. can handle the ball, although his decision-making and consistency remain questions. Ryan Rollins showed encouraging development, but placing the responsibility for an entire offense on him would be a major leap.
Jakučionis possesses the size and passing ability to eventually become part of the solution. Still, relying on a young guard to direct a new roster immediately would create considerable risk.
Milwaukee needs someone who can settle the offense, consistently create advantages and deliver the ball to Herro and Turner in their preferred spots.
Taylor Jenkins faces an important challenge
New head coach Taylor Jenkins can compensate by using a shared creation system. Herro, LeVert, Rollins and Jakučionis can each initiate possessions, while Turner’s shooting should create space for drives.
That approach could make Milwaukee difficult to prepare for, but it could also produce a disjointed offense late in close games. When opponents increase their pressure, the Bucks will need someone they trust to control the pace and make the correct read.

This season is partly about evaluating which members of its new young core can become long-term pieces.
However, the front office should monitor the point guard market. Adding a steady veteran facilitator would reduce the pressure on Herro and give Jenkins more structure.
Milwaukee has enough shooting, frontcourt depth and individual scoring to remain competitive. The Bucks’ ceiling will depend on whether one of their current guards emerges as a reliable offensive organizer.
Until that happens, lead playmaking remains the biggest hole on their roster.
