A new coach and an overhauled roster leave the Bucks searching for their identity in the first season after Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Milwaukee Bucks are preparing for their most unfamiliar season in more than a decade.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis were traded to the Miami Heat during the offseason, officially ending the most successful era in modern franchise history. Milwaukee received Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis and a substantial collection of draft assets in return.

The Bucks also hired former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins to guide a roster transitioning from contention into a new phase.

Milwaukee has intriguing players, but it also has several issues to resolve. These are the three most pressing questions facing the Bucks entering the 2026-27 season.

Who Becomes the Offensive Centerpiece?

Herro is the most established scorer Milwaukee received in the Antetokounmpo trade, making him the logical choice to lead its offense.

The Wisconsin native has already proven he can produce at a high level, but becoming the No. 1 option brings different responsibilities. Defenses will build their game plans around limiting him, and the Bucks will need him to create efficient offense for himself and his teammates.

Kyle Kuzma and Myles Turner provide veteran scoring, but neither profiles as a conventional offensive engine. That leaves Herro with an opportunity to show whether he can become more than a productive complementary star.

Which Young Players Are Building Blocks?

Milwaukee’s long-term outlook will be determined by the development of its younger players.

Ware gives the Bucks a mobile center with rim-protection ability and offensive upside. Jaquez is an experienced wing who can create from several areas of the floor, while Jakučionis gives Jenkins another young ballhandler to develop.

The Bucks also selected Brayden Burries and Nate Ament in the first round of the 2026 draft. Milwaukee must determine which members of that group can become foundational pieces rather than merely rotation players.

Jenkins developed young talent during his tenure in Memphis, but he will need to balance experimentation with maintaining structure. Giving the younger Bucks consistent roles should be more important than chasing a low playoff seed.

What Does Success Look Like?

Milwaukee finished 32-50 last season and is no longer operating under championship-or-bust expectations.

The Bucks still have enough established talent to remain competitive, but prioritizing short-term wins over development would be shortsighted. Jenkins must establish an identity while the front office evaluates which veterans fit the team’s timeline.

Turner and Kuzma could help stabilize the roster, but they could also become trade candidates if Milwaukee receives offers that improve its long-term position.

Success should not be measured only by whether the Bucks reach the play-in tournament. It should be determined by whether Herro can lead the offense, whether the young core develops and whether Jenkins installs a sustainable system.

The Antetokounmpo era gave Milwaukee a clear identity. Its first season without him will be about beginning the difficult process of creating another one.
