The North Carolina forward is the favorite for the Chicago Bulls to select at No. 4 overall.
It's NBA Combine week in Chicago, which means prospects are making their pitches to the 30 teams on why they deserve to be selected in next month's draft.
With the No. 4 overall pick, the Bulls have been widely projected to pick North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson. The 6-foot-9, 210-pound forward has vaulted his way into the conversation for a top-three pick and could potentially be a franchise-changing player. Wilson's talent on both ends of the floor has earned him comparisons to Kevin Garnett and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The 19-year-old did not shy away from setting big expectations for himself during the Combine. Asked why an NBA team should draft him in a TV interview with ESPN, Wilson confidently spoke about his abilities in a way that is certain to get Bulls fans excited about the future.
"I'm going to change their franchise," Wilson said. "I'm going to change their culture, their program, and I'm going to change their city, honestly. I'm a culture-changer. I did the same thing at North Carolina. We had a rough year the year before. When I was able to play, I changed the culture and I made the city live again. Whatever franchise chooses to draft me knows they're going to get a winner, knows they're going to get a leader and knows they're going to get a culture-changer."
That's something the Bulls need desperately. The franchise is finally entering a rebuild after years without a direction, and alongside 21-year-old Matas Buzelis and 23-year-old Josh Giddey, Wilson could help launch the next era of Chicago Bulls basketball. Bryson Graham is leaving his impact on the front office, but a new head coach will also be coming in soon, and a culture-defining player would help set the Bulls on the right course.
Wilson also perfectly fits Graham's SLAP acronym — Size, Length, Athleticism and Physicality — as the ideal Bull. In addition to his 6-foot-9 frame, 7-foot wingspan and 9-foot standing reach, Wilson's tenacity and aggressiveness on offense and defense make him a force for all 94 feet.
The former Tar Heel is already familiar with Graham's principle, too.
"I know about the SLAP: Size, Length, Athleticism, Physicality," Wilson told NBA Draft Combine reporters with a smile. "I think [Chicago] would be a great spot, but I'm just blessed to be in this opportunity and I'll be a great player for whoever drafts me."
And when asked if he was a "SLAP guy," Wilson didn't hesitate to say he fit the mold.
"For sure, I'm whatever my team needs me to be. I win, and that's what I'm going to do."
Wilson averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game during his lone season in Chapel Hill.
