The Chicago Bulls continued to make moves ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline. The Bulls--who usually aren't extremely active ahead of the trade deadline--made another move on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier this week, the Bulls made deals sending out Nikola Vucevic to the Boston Celtics for Anfernee Simons while swapping second round picks; and dealing Dario Saric and Kevin Huerter to the Detroit Pistons in a deal that netted them Jaden Ivey and Mike Conley Jr. On Wednesday the Bulls made another trade, sending out longtime Bull Coby White to the Charlotte Hornets for Collin Sexton, Ousmane Dieng, and three second-round picks.
The move sees Chicago committing to a full-scale rebuild after years of tiptoeing around the possibility. The fact that the trade has Sexton going to Chicago is intriguing, and could signal that the Bulls are not done making trades. Sexton joins an almost comically crowded guard room in Chicago.
Following the Bulls trades, they currently have Ayo Dosunmu (for now), Sexton, Simons, Ivey, Tre Jones, Josh Giddey, and Yuki Kawamura on their roster. It is nice that Giddey provides some rebounding, general versatility, and is unselfish, as all of these qualities will be needed to make this current Bulls roster make sense on the court.
The Bulls--regardless of if they make more moves from this point--have made solid moves in terms of ta...rebuilding, acquiring three more second round picks to go along with the rest of their war chest of draft assets. These moves clear out the Bulls roster in terms of long term players, and give them the flexibility to package together some of their many picks if they want to acquire someone.
Coby White lands in Charlotte, with a young group that has been playing some of their best basketball as of late and are looking to take the next step. Whether or not Charlotte reaches the postseason, having White in tow with LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel gives the Hornets plenty of reason for hope moving forward, and they are also likely to re-sign Coby White to a dela that provides a considerable raise.
This move will hurt Bulls fans for awhile losing a longtime favorite. But they should take solace in the fact the the Chicago front office seems to finally be valuing the bigger picture.
