On the heels of a fourth consecutive defeat, the Chicago Bulls are in dire need of a change.
Billy Donovan's squad has played the hardest strength of schedule in the NBA through 11 games, including an active four-game losing streak to the Bucks, Cavaliers, Spurs and Pistons. The team's opponent luck does improve going forward, as Chicago's remaining strength of schedule is the easiest in the league, but the Bulls still need to fix glaring flaws that have been exposed over the past week.
Bulls fans can find solace in the fact that reinforcements are inbound. For the first time this season, Chicago is expected to have its starting backcourt of Coby White and Josh Giddey on the court together next week. White has yet to make his season debut after suffering a preseason calf injury and subsequent setback, while Giddey has missed the team's last two games with an ankle injury.
Starting on Sunday, the Bulls will play five games in seven days. The first three will come on the road — at Utah, Denver and Portland — before the team returns home to host Miami and Washington at the United Center.
Donovan revealed that both White and Giddey were full participants during Friday's team practice, setting the stage for them to play within the next week.
"Both guys seemed fine," Donovan said. "The last time Coby went through practice, I said to you guys, I have to wait to see how it is after. I haven't spoken to the medical guys or Coby since practice has ended, but he was fine, he went through everything. It seemed like he was good, but we'll see how he is coming out of it. Josh seemed like he was fine. We'll see how he is coming out of it. Both guys didn't miss anything and went through everything."
Between Giddey's summer contract holdout and White's preseason injury, Friday was the first time Chicago's starting backcourt had practiced together since last season. White will be on a minutes restriction as he eases back into play and could make his debut as soon as Sunday, barring another setback.
The 25-year-old guard told the media on Friday that he felt "good" physically, is back to full speed and is not scared of reaggravating his calf injury.
"You can't live your life in fear, thinking about the past," White said. "That's not really how I live my life. I felt good today. Everything went well. I made it through. Obviously, I'm going to wait and see how it responds tomorrow, but hopefully everything goes well."
White added that he wants to play in all five of the Bulls' games next week, but understands that the medical staff will likely limit him to three. He joked that he tried to talk his way out of a minutes restriction, but was unsuccessful and now expects to play roughly 24 minutes in his first action.
The Bulls currently sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. Chicago has lost five of its last six games after starting the season 5-0.
