Golden State wing Jimmy Butler tore his ACL on Monday night, effectively ending the 36-year-old's season. With the Warriors searching for any way to pull off one last championship run in the twilight of Steph Curry's career, Butler may be on the move.
Could his old home of Chicago be a viable landing spot?
The Bulls have reportedly discussed a trade for Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga over the last year, and as the Feb. 5 trade deadline approaches, Chicago's front office could certainly check in about reuniting with Butler in an expanded trade package.
Here's what a trade for Butler and Kuminga could look like, as well as why each team would say yes to the deal:
The following trade proposal was created using Fanspo.com's NBA Trade Machine and Cap Manager.
Bulls Receive: F Jimmy Butler, F Jonathan Kuminga, C Trayce Jackson-Davis, 2030 Golden State Second-Round Pick (Unprotected)
Warriors Receive: C Nikola Vucevic, G Coby White, G Kevin Huerter, F Patrick Williams
Roster Move: Warriors sign guard Coby White to a standard contract extension worth 5 years, $132.8 million (4 years, $120 million in new money — $30 million annually).

Jimmy Butler is beloved in Chicago, and he clearly has fond memories of his time with the team that drafted him, too. Last month, following a 123-91 win over the Bulls, Butler said that the city of Chicago "deserves to win" and compete for a championship. He also said the Bulls' playoff atmosphere was unlike any other he'd played in.
Now 36 years old, it's a toss-up as to whether Butler will be the same player when he returns from his ACL tear. But Butler will sell tickets in the United Center, and at the cost of three expiring contracts and Patrick Williams, the Bulls have the cap space to absorb Butler's $54.1 million salary while he recovers this year and $56.8 million in 2026-27.
If Butler does return to form, the Bulls will have acquired the All-Star-level wing talent they've desired since the implosion of the LaVine-DeRozan-Vucevic trio. If Butler looks like a player in his high-30s coming off an ACL tear usually does, the fan-favorite can ride off into the sunset as he attempts to mentor a Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis-led team.

Mandatory Credit: David Gonzales-Imagn ImagesAt just 23 years old, Kuminga is the truly intriguing piece of it all. The 6-foot-7 wing has not found consistent playing time in Golden State and desperately needs a change of scenery. This would very similarly mirror Arturas Karnisovas' bet on Giddey over a year ago, which has turned the odd man out of OKC's rotation into a potential All-Star in Chicago.
I'm sure the Bulls would like better draft compensation added here than a 2030 second-rounder, but it's hard to imagine the Warriors giving up anything better when they're trading players of Butler's and Kuminga's caliber for almost solely expiring contracts.
If this trade were proposed in the offseason, Golden State hangs up the phone laughing. With Butler sidelined for at least the rest of this season and likely part of the 2026-27 season, though, the Warriors now have over $110 million on the bench in the critical final years of Curry's career.
The expirings give Golden State the chance to win now without being financially tied up next summer. Vucevic fills an important rebounding need, while White adds a secondary creator element alongside Curry. Both Williams and Kevin Huerter would replace the team's shooting lost by Butler's departure.
After the trade, the Warriors' starting five could feature Curry, White, Brandin Podziemski, Draymond Green and Vucevic, with Moses Moody, De'Anthony Melton, Huerter, Williams, Buddy Hield, Quinten Post, Gary Payton II and more coming off the bench. Golden State would retain its depth while adding high-end starters to a team that is only 2.5 games behind the No. 4 seed in the West.
It remains to be seen whether the Warriors would reward White — who has missed half of Chicago's 42 games this season with a calf injury — with the contract extension he desires. However, I think Golden State is so desperate for a secondary creator that a deal would get done.
