To secure his place in Chicago’s future, the versatile rookie must rediscover his offensive aggression, leverage his elite defensive length, and prove he can impact winning beyond scoring.
The Chicago Bulls will have plenty of young players worth watching throughout the preseason, but Dailyn Swain might be one of the most intriguing.
Swain's combination of size, defense and versatility gives him an interesting long-term ceiling. However, his Summer League performance also showed that there are areas of his game that still need significant development.
Preseason gives him another opportunity to prove he can eventually become a legitimate piece of the Bulls' young core.
Here are three things Swain needs to show.

Swain's Summer League performance in Las Vegas left plenty to be desired offensively.
The biggest concern wasn't necessarily missed shots or turnovers. It was how passive he looked with the basketball.
That was surprising considering how effective Swain was with the ball at Texas. He showed the ability to create off the dribble, attack defenders and generate offense for himself. Very little of that translated to Vegas.
Swain probably won't receive significant minutes with Chicago's primary rotation during preseason, but that could actually work in his favor. The second halves of preseason games should give him opportunities to handle the ball and play more freely.
He needs to take advantage of them.
Nobody expects Swain to suddenly become an NBA point guard. The Bulls simply need to see more confidence and decisiveness when the ball is in his hands.
Be a Defensive Asset
This is where Swain could potentially separate himself.
The Bulls need perimeter defenders capable of guarding the point of attack, and Swain has the physical tools to eventually fill that role.
Preseason is the perfect environment for him to show it.
Be disruptive. Pressure ball handlers. Use his length to create deflections. Make opposing guards uncomfortable.
Young players often struggle to earn minutes because coaches don't trust them defensively. If Swain can establish himself as someone Splitter can throw onto an opposing guard or wing, his path toward eventually cracking the rotation becomes much clearer.

Defense might be Swain's calling card, but becoming a useful NBA role player requires finding multiple ways to impact games.
Rebounding could be his second.
Swain was an excellent rebounder for his position in college, and that is something that should translate regardless of how frequently he touches the basketball.
The Bulls don't need Swain to score 20 points during a preseason game. They need him to show he can impact possessions without scoring.
Crash the glass. Create extra possessions. Help finish defensive stops.
Swain still has plenty of development ahead of him, but preseason is his opportunity to establish exactly what kind of player he can become.
If he can defend, rebound and look more confident with the basketball, that would be a good sign after a difficult showing in Vegas.
