The Cavaliers' roster could shock some people this season.
The Cleveland Cavaliers made the Eastern Conference Finals last year, but the team isn't satisfied with how things ended.
Cleveland was swept out of the playoffs, and this team now enters the 2026-27 NBA season ready to prove itself again. After getting out of the second round, the Cavaliers believe that they can go even further this year.
The Cavaliers are still led by stars James Harden and Donovan Mitchell, offering the team one of the best scoring backcourts in the NBA. Both players are determined to get this team over the hump this year, and the front office has given them some extra help this offseason.
The big addition for this team over the summer was signing defensive forward Peyton Watson to a massive four-year, $88 million contract. Watson has improved his play each year in the NBA, but the 2026-27 season will be the more important for him.
Cleveland is now expecting big things from him after giving out this contract, and the forward will need to deliver. Playing around Mitchell and James Harden should help, offering Watson some cushion in his game.
But heading into the season, there are a lot of questions around the Cavaliers, namely within the bench unit of the team. But ESPN NBA analyst Zach Kram believes that the Cavaliers could have a solid group of players this season.
Kram has predicted that the combination of Sam Merrill, Watson, and Jaylon Tyson will average 40 points per game while shooting over 40 percent from beyond the three-point line this year. If this were to come true, Cleveland could easily be one of the best teams in the NBA again.
Part of what has held the Cavaliers back in recent years has been the lack of scoring around the star players, especially in the playoffs. But if Cleveland were to have a strong bench unit like this, it could provide the starting group with the needed firepower that they have been missing.
Cleveland has done well to build out the wing depth around the star guards, giving this team a better chance to win. The Cavaliers also have two star big men in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, which should help the defense.
All in all, the Cavaliers roster looks much better this coming season, and they should be able to matchup with any team. But this group will be judged by how the playoffs go, which has given this franchise some trouble in recent years.
