The Cleveland Cavaliers fan base has been handed a new update regarding the team's rumored pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga.
Entering the 2026 NBA offseason, all of the buzz surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers had to do with the potential return of hometown hero LeBron James.
After weeks of speculation and the Cavaliers being viewed as a front-runner to sign James, he opted to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers instead. That has left Cleveland scrambling trying to figure out how to pivot and improve the roster.
Shortly after James' decision, the reporting suggested that the Cavaliers were aggressively pursuing free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. He would be a solid consolation prize after missing out on James.
However, the rumors connecting Cleveland to Kuminga have cooled off recently.
A new update has been shared by NBA insider Jake Fischer during a live appearance on Bleacher Report. On Tuesday, August 11, Fischer reported that the Cavaliers were more interested in working out a deal with Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson than they are signing Kuminga.
“Cleveland is, I think, prioritizing a Peyton Watson effort compared to Jonathan Kuminga right now," Fischer said.
That certainly explains why the Kuminga talk has died down. It doesn't rule out Cleveland as a potential Kuminga landing spot. If the Cavaliers are unable to work out a deal for Watson, they could still pivot back to Kuminga.
Watson would be an excellent addition for Cleveland. He is coming off of a quality season with the Nuggets. During the 2025-26 campaign, the 23-year-old guard played in 54 games and made 40 starts, averaging 14.6 points per game to go along with 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 blocks.
Kuminga, on the other hand, played for both the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks last year. He appeared in 36 games and made 14 starts, averaging 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
Expect to hear more about the Cavaliers' offseason plans as the days move forward. For now, it sounds like their Kuminga pursuit has cooled off as they try to acquire Watson.
Missing out on a reunion with James was disappointing, to say the least. That storyline would have been must-watch basketball. It simply wasn't in the cards.
That being said, being able to sign either Watson or Kuminga would be a solid backup plan. Fans will simply have to wait patiently to find out whether or not Cleveland can get a deal done with one player or the other.
