Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz compiled a list of potential MVP winners for the 2030-31 season.
In a league that has been dominated by “Big Three’s,” Cleveland has one of the formidable cores in the league with Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley.
And Mobley was on Swartz’s list.
Ever since he’s arrived in the league, Mobley has gotten better each year, and along the way, has become among the NBA’s most feared defenders, by becoming the Defensive Player of the Year in the 2024-25 season.
Mobley has made a distinct effort at becoming more of an offensive threat, specifically from the perimeter where just last season, he attempted over 200 3-pointers for the first time.
It’s just another wrinkle into Mobley’s already dynamic skillset. With his wiry frame, he’s able to use his athleticism to run in transition, or wiggle around in the low block.
His footwork is fantastic, and he can use his impressive handles for a player his size to maneuver through opposing defenders.
So with that kind of skillset, and with the fact that his offensive production keeps rising every year, why shouldn’t he be an MVP type of player?
Well, Cleveland will need to get him involved on offense more. The duo of Garland and Mitchell may limit those opportunities, since they are similar-sized, ball dominant guards who place an emphasis on scoring.
Not only that, having both of them and Mobley can potentially stifle the team’s growth – and you can’t really win an MVP if you’re not even the first option on your team.
For the past few years, Garland has been a name that’s been thrown around the media, and usually, when there’s smoke, there’s fire.
A duo of Mobley and Mitchell would certainly pay dividends and a Garland trade can certainly bring in a hearty package that General Manager Koby Altman can work with.
Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson spoke over the offseason and put credence to Swartz’s prediction, but instead of five years, Atkinson thinks it can happen earlier.
"I don't want to put pressure on him, but in the next two-to-three years he should be in the MVP conversation," he spoke on an NBA Summer League broadcast.
Perhaps it’s not so out of the question. Mobley did finish 10th in MVP voting this past season, with his teammate Mitchell finishing fifth.
If Mobley comes even close to it though, one of Mitchell or (likely) Garland will need to be moved, but the framework is in place for Mobley to get there.
You’ve seen the ascension, and you know he has the skill. Luckily, he’s only 24 years old, and his MVP window is far from closed, it’s only opening up the longer he’s in the league.
