The Cleveland Cavaliers punched their ticket to the 2026 NBA Playoffs, but realize that's not the final goal.

The ultimate goal for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season isn’t to just be one of the top six teams in the Eastern Conference. For it to be deemed a successful season by the team and the fans, the Cavaliers must go on a long playoff run and reach the conference finals at the very minimum.

That goal takes a lot of steps, though, and Cleveland checked off the first box to that hopeful reality on Thursday, as it officially clinched a spot in the 2026 NBA Playoffs with a victory over the Golden State Warriors.

The Cavaliers are currently the fourth seed in the East with five regular-season games to play. While it’s not impossible to still move up or down in the seeding, Cleveland has secured at least one of the top six spots in the East and has avoided the Play-In Tournament entirely.

In many ways, it was expected that the Cavs would be back in the postseason again this year, but it wasn’t nearly as smooth a ride as it was a year ago when Cleveland clinched a spot at the beginning of March and ended up with 64 wins.

This year was almost entirely different: the Cavs only clinched on the second day of April and faced much more adversity throughout the season. At one point, Cleveland was even 17-16, and it looked like they might need to find their way into the dance through the Play-In Tournament.

Again, reaching the playoffs was the exception, but it’s still an accomplishment, and head coach Kenny Atkinson said it’s something that the team does, in fact, celebrate in the locker room.

“Never underestimate the importance of making the playoffs in the NBA,” said Cleveland’s head coach on Thursday. “In pro sports, it's so hard, it's so competitive. Pretty much all of us in that locker room have been on the other side. You’re winning 19 games, 20 games, and it's hard to be in that group.”

In fact, Atkinson noted that his team faced adversity and didn’t have a smooth path to get here, which makes it all the sweeter for the team to acknowledge.

Yes, Cleveland is celebrating making the playoffs, but it's still fully aware of what’s at stake and understands this isn’t the final goal.

“Obviously, we want more, but yeah, we celebrate it,” continued Atkinson.
