The Cleveland Cavaliers are losing a key rotational player to another Eastern Conference team.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are losing Dean Wade in free agency as he has signed a four-year, $39 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

This is a disappointing loss for the Cavs, but it was expected. Cleveland is in a difficult position as they are trying to dodge the second apron while fielding a competitive roster around Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley.

The Cavs are also looking to retain James Harden in free agency and are pursuing LeBron James for a third stint in Cleveland. However, in the meantime, they have lost two quality players in Keon Ellis and Wade.

Wade played well in the 2025-26 season, averaging 5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 36.2 percent from three.

The Cavs will now await a decision from Harden and James, which means they'll likely have to build some depth and replacements for players like Wade and Ellis with veteran minimums.

Cleveland was competitive in the 2025-26 season, finishing with a 52-30 record, which put them fourth in the East. The Cavs made a run to the Eastern Conference Finals but were swept by the New York Knicks.

This is an important offseason for them, as Mitchell is entering the final year of his deal, earning $50.1 million with a $53.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season.

If they're unable to field a roster capable of contending for a title, Mitchell could leave next offseason for another team. The star guard averaged 27.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from behind the arc.

Koby Altman and Cleveland's front office have a lot of work to do this offseason, but losing Wade and Ellis is not a great start for the Cavs.
