The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly signed Meleek Thomas to a multi-year contract.
For the first time since the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Meleek Thomas with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft last week, the guard was in Northeast Ohio at the team facility.
Thomas did more than just meet with media members and don the Wine and Gold for the first time; the 19-year-old also officially signed with the Cavaliers.
The guard’s first contract is a little unorthodox for a second-round pick. Thomas reportedly signed a four-year $9.3 million deal, with the first three years fully guaranteed for $6.4 million, per Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype.
Players not selected in the first round typically have to prove their worth before locking down a fully guaranteed, multi-year deal, but not Thomas.
Cleveland has actually made a similar move before. After the Cavaliers selected Tyrese Proctor with the 49th overall pick in the 2025 draft, the front office also signed him to a four-year deal.
With the Cavaliers navigating a high payroll and a tight salary cap, this strategy is a smart one for Cleveland's front office to continue developing players while also building a cost-controlled young core for the future.
The Cavaliers clearly have faith that Thomas can either make an immediate impact on their roster or develop into a player they can rely on in the near future.

"They love competing, they love building each other and get better as a staff, as an organization. They love to make their players better. And they love workers, and I'm a worker myself."
The Cavaliers' ability to select Thomas in the second round already looked like it could be one of the more valuable picks in the draft. He had first-round potential, but the depth of the 2026 class made Thomas drop in comparison.
Thomas averaged 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 43 percent from the floor and 41 percent from behind the arc during his freshman season at Arkansas.
Cleveland having Thomas under contract for multiple seasons is a great move for the organization, and it also takes pressure off the 19-year-old to prove himself right away, giving him time to develop into the best NBA player he can be over the next few seasons.
