Donovan Mitchell clearly still feels he has a future with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Donovan Mitchell can’t control it; there will be questions about Mitchell’s future with the organization as the offseason officially gets underway.
Whether or not Cleveland’s season was a success is in the eye of the beholder, but what is true is that the Cavaliers failed to accomplish their ultimate goal of winning a championship.
What is also true is that Mitchell will become extension-eligible this summer and will have one year remaining on his deal if he and the team don't agree to a new contract.
For players in a similar situation, this is historically when a front office either decides to go all in and extend that player or looks to trade him to recoup some of his value.
Even though the Cavaliers were eliminated from the playoffs earlier than they wanted, Mitchell made it abundantly clear immediately after their Game 4 loss: he wants to stay in Cleveland.
“I said the same thing, I love it here,” Mitchell said. “I don't know how else to say it. I've said it before I signed the other extension. Like, I love it here.”

“I have no doubt this group can get there,” he exclaimed.
That statement alone from Mitchell should, in theory, shut down any trade rumors or speculation. Mitchell has been consistent and candid about how much he enjoys playing for this city and the organization.
However, that isn’t always the case, and the superstar understands that’s the reality of playing in the NBA.
“Reports are gonna be reported. People are gonna be people,” Mitchell continued.
“It's great energy to see the city when we got to the Conference Finals. Just to feel that, that's amazing. That's why getting swept this sucks, because, you know, you feel. , like, even driving in [to the arena], like, people were going crazy. Like, I love that. I love that about this place, man.”
The Cavaliers' roster is bound for some changes this offseason, some of which could alter the franchise's outlook.
However, based on Mitchell’s comments, he’s clearly committed to Cleveland and the organization for the long haul, whatever that may look like.
“The city deserves a ring, and we just, we just gotta keep going.”
