Running it back with the Philadelphia 76ers following a blowout in Game 1 of their mini-series, the Cleveland Cavaliers will have their work cut out for them. Both their All-Star starting point guard and movement shooting threat are out, which means the team will have to improvise its strategy.
In the latest episode of Courtside with Cavs, Spencer German and I discussed what Friday night could look like for the Cavs in Philadelphia:
"The jury is out. I don't know what's gonna happen. We did see Lonzo Ball [last game], the first action he's gotten in about a week. Kenny [Atkinson] went 10 deep instead of the nine that he's been going to for three or four games. It sucks to not have DG because he is the offensive engine, but you do have guys like Craig Porter Jr., you have guys like Tyrese Proctor. You want to get them these kinds of reps.
"They're gonna have to get creative. They're gonna have to play a little bit more high pick-and-roll, get the bigs involved like Evan [Mobley] and Jarrett [Allen] were [Wednesday]. They were fantastic, especially to open the game, in the pockets and finding those little seams. They passed the ball to each other, to their teammates; a lot of give-and-go... You're gonna have to go to them, go through them."
After Friday's game, the Cavs will return home and have back-to-back days off for the first time in three weeks.
Cleveland will next host the reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder in a Monday matinee affair at Rocket Arena on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It should be an incredible test for the wine-and-gold.
