LeBron James is slated to make his return to Rocket Area on Wednesday evening as the Los Angeles Lakers visit town to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. With James now in his age-41 season, there’s a real possibility the basketball legend could call it a career come the summer, meaning Wednesday could be his last game in Cleveland.
That said, Cleveland’s head coach Kenny Atkinson knows how important this matchup will be for the fan base. Even though LeBron is sitting on the opposing bench, he’ll likely get a loud ovation when his name is introduced in the starting lineup.
“I know the Cavs fans just celebrate him every game he plays [and] we get a chance to compete against them [and] compete in the same arena; it's a celebration,” Atkinson said. I can't wait. Like, I just hope everybody's [excited]... It's gonna be fun.”

LeBron’s legacy goes beyond and means much more than just sports.
Even though Atkinson doesn’t have the same connection to James as those sitting in the stands, he’s still incredibly respectful of the legacy LeBron is leaving on the game of basketball.
“I always felt like, LeBron, as great as he is, he was played with class. Like, I never felt like he - he's respectful, respectful of the other team, respectful of his opponent, and, class, class act. Great for the NBA… I don't know, it could be his last game here. He could also have, like, four more years left.” said Atkinson.
In terms of the game itself, there will be no love lost once the ball is tipped.
The Cavliers are looking to build on their season-high four-game winning streak, while the Lakers continue their pursuit of a top-three seed in the Western Conference. Even though it’s still January, there’s a lot on the line in terms of momentum in this game, and while there will be a lot of attention on LeBron, the Cavaliers are well aware of this, too.
