NBA legend LeBron James has been predicted to leave the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason for the first time since 2018 and Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report believes The King will leave the Lakers for his hometown Cavaliers.
"A third stint in Cleveland could give James a shot to contend for a championship during a proper farewell tour," Hughes wrote. "Though the Cavs have Donovan Mitchell's extension and James Harden's always fraught contract demands to consider, adding James to the mix should be a priority. If the whole core is back, LeBron would fit cleanly into a starting spot between the Mitchell-Harden backcourt and the Evan Mobley-Jarrett Allen duo up front."
James Harden and Donovan Mitchell are expected to speak to James about coming home this offseason. If James signs with the Cavaliers, Kenny Atkinson will have a lethal starting lineup of Harden, Mitchell, James, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen next season.
James, of course, is the greatest player in Cavaliers history. He has played for the franchise twice and will get his No. 23 jersey retired by Dan Gilbert and Co. one day.
James last played for Cleveland during the 2017-18 season. The Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors in the 2018 NBA Finals and James left home for the Lakers in free agency shortly after.
Arguably the best player in NBA history, James is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He is the NBA's all-time leader in points and field goals.
James, 41, remains an elite offensive force despite being the association's oldest active player. The Akron native is averaging 21.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game for the Lakers this season.
In two stints with the Cavaliers, James averaged 27.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.6 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He won two MVPs and one Finals MVP and made 10 All-Star teams with his hometown club.
Lakers fans don't appreciate James because of their devotion to Kobe Bryant. It makes sense for James to finish his career where it started. Cavaliers fans love James since he's from Akron, Ohio, and led the franchise to the 2016 championship against the 73-9 Warriors.
If James doesn’t retire from the NBA this offseason, it will be fascinating to see where he’s playing next season. It will probably be the Lakers or Cavaliers.
