Where Would the Cleveland Cavaliers Be Without Jaylon Tyson? cover image

Jaylon Tyson's sophomore surge is propelling the Cavaliers. His consistent energy and clutch plays are proving indispensable this season.

Halfway through his second season in the NBA, Jaylon Tyson is consistently bringing energy and winning plays to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cleveland Cavaliers swingman Jaylon Tyson has had a sophomore surge that only a handful of his 2024 NBA Draft classmates can relate to.

Going from fewer than 10 minutes to almost 28 minutes per game is a massive leap, but the production in that playing time has been essential to Cleveland all season.

Entering Sunday, Tyson ranked fifth in three-point percentage (46.2%) and 13th in effective field goal percentage (61.4%), according to Basketball-Reference.

He's playing within the flow of the game offensively, establishing a connection with Donovan Mitchell on the short roll with his floaters and confidently spotting up from distance.

Defensively, the Cavs have assigned Tyson to top opposing scorers, utilizing him for the full length of the court to make it difficult on them.

In the latest episode of Courtside with Cavs, Spencer German and I analyzed Tyson's impact on Cleveland and where he still has room to improve:

"He's been a total package for them this year. He's got to work on the fouling, and he's got to work on not staring down his targets. He cannot lock in on one person and then make a late pass; that's gonna hurt you, and that's gonna come with the growing pains. But, ultimately, we're halfway into the season right now, and he's probably been their most consistent player.

"If they don't have him... where are they without Jaylon Tyson? Probably under .500, if we're being completely honest. Really, where he's coming along the most is that he's got a next-play mentality, next-play attitude. This guy, he's just got that dawg in him. He just does it every night. I'm coming to expect it."

The Cavs will finish their home-and-home series with the Orlando Magic at Rocket Arena on Monday night, then host LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. After two games downtown, Cleveland has a five-game road trip out west on the docket.
