Leading up to the start of free agency, there was a growing feeling around the NBA that LeBron James might not return to the Los Angeles Lakers after playing the last eight seasons with the historic franchise.

That was all but confirmed in a report by ESPN’s Shams Charania, as he noted that James informed the Lakers he plans to move on to a new team next season.

What if that new team was actually an old team? What if LeBron James decided to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers (again)? There’s a very compelling case to be made that a reunion with the Cavaliers could be James’ best option for his next team. 

LeBron James’ story in Cleveland is well known at this point: he was born in Akron, Ohio, played at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, was drafted by the Cavaliers in 2003, returned to the organization in 2014, and led them to the 2016 Finals, breaking the city’s 52-year curse.

At 41 years old, James is in the twilight of his career. Coming back to the Cavaliers for a potential farewell tour with the organization where he began his journey and won his most important championship would be the perfect way for James to end his NBA career. 

LeBron coming back to Cleveland would not only be the perfect storybook ending, but also give James what he wants.

A potential reunion in Cleveland wouldn’t just be about the legacy; the Cavaliers already have one of the top rosters in the Eastern Conference, which has the talent to compete for a championship next season. 

It sounds like that situation is exactly what James is looking for.  

Reports indicate that LeBron is still interested in competing at a high level and winning a championship in what could be his final season in the NBA. If that’s what the future Hall of Famer wants, that’s exactly what the Cavaliers can give to him. 

Whether LeBron is on the roster or not, the Cavaliers will make moves this summer to ensure they’re a Finals contender in 2026-27.

They have a fairly complete roster right now with a core of Donovan Mitchell, (likely) James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett, which made it to the Eastern Conference Finals a year ago. 

It just so happens that LeBron would be the perfect missing piece as the Cavaliers have been searching for a true win, well, since James left back after the 2018 season. 

That said, even if the 41-year-old isn’t interested in a reunion, Cleveland appears determined to make more moves to ensure its contender status, which should at the very least pique the interest of James as he determines what team to sign with.
