Donovan Mitchell solidified his superstar status with the Cleveland Cavaliers, yet a taxing postseason workload and old isolation habits hindered a deeper playoff run.

It was a momentous season for Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell, but falling back into bad habits ultimately became his and the team's undoing in the NBA playoffs.

Donovan Mitchell's embrace of the Cleveland Cavaliers has been felt on and off the court since he came over via trade four summers ago. He has been a top-tier locker-room leader, a selfless superstar in between the lines, and a respected ambassador for the franchise and city.

Mitchell's latest season with the Wine and Gold confirmed that he is one of the best, if not the best, shooting guards in the NBA. His highest priority was to conserve his energy and pick his spots rather than empty the tank every single night. Mitchell was focused on making the right next plays, helping guide the young talent on the roster, and taking over only when necessary.

In back-to-back seasons, Mitchell has played at least 70 games, maintaining his body at the level an All-NBA player needs to in this league to be successful. What he is still figuring out, though, is how to ensure he is at his peak form physically by the time the postseason rolls around.

This latest playoff stint was different for him due to a massive roster change. He had to get used to performing alongside James Harden, while also continuing to score at an elite level.

By reaching the conference finals stage for the first time in his career, it felt like Mitchell's body couldn't hold up with the workload. He didn't have the same explosiveness as the number of games stacked, and there was a lot of settling instead of trusting.

Mitchell and the Cavs were at their best when they involved Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, and the same can be said of past years. For some reason, when his teammates' perimeter shots aren't falling, the 29-year-old guard feels like the onus is all on him, which is a nasty habit come postseason time. It only puts a strain on your defense when the offense isn't run with flow, rather than trying to do it all yourself.

Overall, Mitchell has more to work on as he tries to ascend the ladder to championship gold. Slowly, but surely, he's on his way and wants to take Cleveland to that promised land.

It should be known that the clock is ticking, though. Mitchell is extension-eligible in the offseason, and his current contract is on borrowed time. He has professed his love for this group time and time again when given the chance. But at some point, the dam breaks for both parties.

The Cavs took a baby step forward in 2025-26, and the results of 2026-27 could determine which direction they may go when it comes to Mitchell — and the team overall.
