Bill Simmons Predicts Jayson Tatum's Return Date cover image

Speculation builds that the Boston Celtics star could make season debut this week.

Speculation builds that the Boston Celtics star could make season debut this week

For weeks, the date had a certain symmetry.

March 1 felt neat.

It felt cinematic.

A new month, a national stage, a natural checkpoint in Jayson Tatum’s recovery timeline.

Instead, the Celtics (40-20) faced the 76ers (33-27) on Sunday night without him, and the wait continued - steady, deliberate, and by design.

Still, the sense around Boston is no longer if, but when.

Following the Celtics’ win, prominent NBA podcaster and noted superfan Bill Simmons offered a prediction during a live taping of his podcast.

“Tatum, it feels like it’s gonna be Friday vs. Dallas. All signs are pointing to Friday, Dallas,” Simmons told fellow NBA talking head Zach Lowe.

It’s speculation, yes. But it’s informed speculation - and it aligns with the broader rhythm of Tatum’s rehab.

From the beginning, the organization has resisted tying his return to a symbolic date.

Even when NBC flexed a recent Sunday matchup into primetime and rolled out its Tatum-focused docuseries, “The Quiet Work,” the Celtics never hinted at accelerating the timeline. Tatum himself has consistently emphasized that there is no firm return date, only progress.

“I think it’s just important that I’ve worked this hard to just kind of get myself in a position where it could be a conversation,” Tatum told the media after one of his recent practice sessions.

That distinction has mattered. A conversation is not a countdown.

Tatum only recently resumed five-on-five activity, and those close to the situation have made clear that he won’t return until he feels like himself - not a version easing into form, but the standard he’s set as a six-time All-Star and the franchise’s centerpiece.

After tearing his Achilles in the second round of last season’s playoffs, patience was always going to be part of the process, even if outside speculation moved faster.

In the meantime, Boston has done more than tread water.

The Celtics enter Monday night’s game in Milwaukee at 40-20, winners in bunches despite a demanding stretch of games.

They face the Bucks (26-33) on the second night of a back-to-back, then host Charlotte (30-31) on Wednesday before Dallas (21-39) comes to town Friday for a 7:00 p.m. tip.

If there’s a target, that Mavericks game now looms as the most logical stage.

Nothing has been announced. Nothing is guaranteed.

But March has arrived - the window that always felt realistic - and the momentum around Tatum’s return is building in a way that feels measured rather than hopeful.

The spotlight will be waiting whenever he steps back on the floor.

The Celtics, for now, are making sure he doesn’t rush to meet it.
