The Bruins opened up their season on Tuesday night and Charlie Jacobs took to the microphone beforehand.

The Boston Bruins opened up their 2026-27 season on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers, but Bruins owner Charlie Jacobs weighed in on something that will interest Boston Celtics fans in a conversation with the media.

Remember back in August when new C's owner Bill Chisholm said that the Celtics could eventually look to build their own arena? Well, that's what Jacobs weighed in on to reporters, including those from WEEI:

“My hope is that they stay here, and every discussion that we've had to date has been about them staying here. … It's been very clear that in order to keep pace, we need to have the best in class, and we shoot and aim for nothing less than having the best in class.”

How the current situation works for the Celtics

1) The Delaware North group owns the Bruins, and the Delaware North group owns TD Garden where the Celtics and Bruins both play.

2) As a result, the Celtics are a paying tenant. They lease the building. If you've ever leased a car or an apartment, you know their are benefits and drawbacks to this. The main benefit is that you don't have to pay for upgrades or maintenance, but you also don't see any of the financial perks of owning your own place.

3) As a result, the Celtics don't take in a single dollar from outside events held at the building throughout the year. Any concerts, festivals, anything. That money all goes to Delaware North. Furthermore, the Celtics don't take in any money from concessions or parking, and they only get limited revenue from sponsorship sales.

Why the Celtics would want their own building

Obviously, so they could get all that missing revenue! The Celtics are a business and businesses like to make money, as much as they can. Furthermore, with the rising cost of player salaries and everything associated with owning a team, having your own arena revenue stream is a good thing.

Of course, paying for a new building will be very expensive, so the ownership group will have to weigh that cost against the potential revenue that would be taken in.

Timeline

For now, this isn't much of a story yet. The Celtics' lease at TD Garden runs through 2036 so there's still a decade under the current setup. However, the Celtics do intend to build their own building, you will likely hear things about it soon. There will have to be government conversation, public votes, funding talk and then shovels in the ground. That all takes time, so while a decade seems like a long time, it will move quicker than that.

The Celtics will begin their regular season on Oct. 20 at the Detroit Pistons.
