The point guard signed a two-year extension this week, and he reflected on it with the media on Sunday.

Speaking on Sunday morning, Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard opened up on his new two-year contract extension with the team that will keep him in Boston for the next three seasons.

Speaking with the media, Pritchard said he loves Boston and loves competing for the city. And while he didn't say this directly, he certainly insinuated that $22 million a year is a lot of money and that he wasn't necessarily concerned with chasing the highest dollar figure possible. He said that if he continues to work hard and stay hungry, there might be more money in another deal down the road.

But he is happy to remain in Boston and seems more than satisfied with his new contract.

About Pritchard

Now 28 years old, Pritchard is a six-year veteran of the Celtics. Drafted in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft out of Oregon, he helped the C's win the NBA Finals in 2023-24 and was named Sixth Man of the Year in 2024-25. He's averaged 10.6 ppg for his career, but had the best year of his career last season, averaging 17.0 ppg as Jayson Tatum missed most of the season while recovering from an injury.

With Jaylen Brown now out of the mix after being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, Pritchard could see his role increase yet again this season. He'll be expected to score for this team alongside Tatum, and he's one of the best 3-point shooters on this team, which is important in the 3-point happy offense the Celtics run.

An amazing 180

The Celtics got to the NBA Finals in 2021-22, losing to the Golden State Warriors, and they were seen as Eastern Conference favorites to get there again in 2022-23. However, despite the team expectations and high probability of success, Pritchard wasn't happy. He asked the front office for a trade at the trade deadline in 2023 because he wasn't playing all that much.

The Celtics held onto him, and things have turned out well for both parties. Pritchard is extremely happy with his role and his contributions. And the organization is obviously happy with him, as evidenced by the multiple contracts they've given him in his career.

Up next

Pritchard and the Celtics will be back in action on Tuesday night in the NBA's season opener. Boston will play at 3 p.m. ET against the Detroit Pistons, who earned the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs last year.
