One of the best two-way players in the NBA, White nearly made NBA history this season.
The Boston Celtics will learn their opponent for the first round of the NBA playoffs on Wednesday night at the conclusion of the play-in game between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic (7:30 p.m. ET).
After going 56-26, the C's are the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, and they look like real contenders to win the NBA title for the second time in three years (also 2023-24).
With solid guard play in the form of Payton Pritchard and Derrick White, superstar wing play in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and a solid stable of big men, the Celtics are surprisingly one of the deepest teams in the NBA.
And in White, Boston has one of the best two-way players in the entire league. The nine-year veteran of the San Antonio Spurs and Celtics averaged a career-high 16.5 ppg and 5.4 assists this season, while also recording 98 blocks in 77 games. He fell two blocks shy of becoming the first player in league history to hit 200 three-pointers and record 100 blocks. After finishing in the Top 10 of Defensive Player of the Year voting in each of the last two years, it's possible that White receives votes for the top spot this season.
Speaking at a practice session on Wednesday, White said: "We have a lot of guys that made me look good. So if I get some votes, that's cool, but I'm not really focused on it."
As expected, White took the humble approach, but his individual greatness and commitment to defense cannot be overlooked. He's a foundational part of what head coach Joe Mazzulla has built in Boston since arriving in the 2022-23 season.
White also arrived that season, coming over in a midseason trade with the Spurs. He averaged 11.0 ppg in 26 games and then averaged 12.4 the next season as Boston beat the Dallas Mavericks for the NBA title.

Some of the broadcast information has been released for the first round of the playoffs. We know that the Celtics will open play on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET and that the game will air on ABC.
Game 2 will happen on Tuesday and will be shown on Peacock. Game 3 will happen on April 24 (Prime Video) will Game 4 will be April 26 on NBC.
The fragmented nature of the viewing schedule is likely to cause frustration among fans who are tired of not knowing where the Celtics will play each night.
