The C's brought in Nikola Vucevic at the trade deadline in 2025-26, but he's not expected to return.

Nikola Vucevic's stay in Boston is expected to be short, as Marc Stein reports that the talented big man is expected to leave the Celtics in free agency this summer.

The Celtics had acquired him at the trade deadline from the Chicago Bulls, sending out Anfernee Simons with some second round draft picks also changing hands. The deal didn't really work out for either side on the court, as Vucevic missed substantial time with a broken finger. He played in just 16 regular season games, averaging 21 minutes per night and scoring just 9.7 ppg. He averaged 6.2 ppg in the playoffs as the Celtics were eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games in the first round.

A 15-year veteran of the Orlando Magic, Bulls, 76ers and Celtics, Vucevic is a two-time All-Star who is heading for 36 years old.

It's understandable that he'd want to be with a team that can utilize his offensive skillset - and can pay him. It's also understandable why the Celtics wouldn't want to pay top price for a soon-to-be 36 year old stretch center, especially at a time when they are reportedly trying to less three-point dependent.

But when Vucevic exits the fold, it will be interesting to see how the Celtics handle the big man rotation. Neemias Queta delivered a solid season, averaging more than 10 points per game, but he's no threat on the outside. Luka Garza is a solid stretch option, but is he ready to see significant minutes nightly?

Or do the Celtics need to draft an interior player in the draft? They've been connected to both Tarris Reed Jr. of UConn and Henri Veesaar of North Carolina. Or do they need to make a trade for additional big man depth? These are all things that Brad Stevens will have to develop answers to in the next few weeks.

Also in the news for the Celtics

The biggest story of the NBA's offseason is undoubtedly going to be what happens with Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo is not guaranteed to be traded from Milwaukee, but if he is, the Miami Heat appear determined to make a run at him. The Celtics have been connected to him as well, but the story has cooled over the last several days.

However, speaking on Friday's edition of the Dan Patrick Show, Sam Amick of The Athletic said that Antetokounmpo is intrigued by Boston and has great respect for head coach Joe Mazzulla.
