The Celtics looked ready to lock in their first win of the season, but ultimately fell in Detroit.
The Boston Celtics looked primed to open the 2026-27 season with a win on Tuesday afternoon, but ultimately lost 121-113 against the Detroit Pistons in Detroit.
Coming off a 56-26 season a year ago, Boston is a much different team without Jaylen Brown this year, and for a while, they looked great, building a 22-point lead. However, the Pistons went on a 23-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull in front and take the victory.
As noted by the NBA, the Pistons are the first team to come back from 20+ points down and win on day one of the season since 1997. That means the Celtics are the first team to give up a 20-point lead and lose on day one of the season since 1997.
Here's more of what you need to know:
Inside the numbers
--The Celtics got a great team debut from Paul George, who had 38 points in 31 minutes. George was 12-of-21 from the floor and 7-of-12 from 3-point range. He had the most points in a team debut in Celtics history, and he had that by the third quarter.
--Jayson Tatum, on the other hand, struggled to get going in this one. He was just 6-of-23 from the floor and had 13 points in 38 minutes of action.
--Neemias Queta had just three points while Mitchell Robinson had just four. That's not enough production from the two centers you gave good money to in the offseason. Luka Garza had just two points in eight minutes, meaning the combined big men had only nine.
--Derrick White shot better than the last time we saw him in the playoffs: He was 7-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-7 from 3-point range. He had 17 and was one of five Celtics players in double figures.
--Boston was out-rebounded by 10, 49-39. That's another disappointment considering the financial resources put into the interior.
Also need to know
Rookie Chris Cenac Jr. didn't play, and neither did Mike Conley or Ron Harper Jr. Jordan Walsh didn't score in 13 minutes of action, but he did pull down six rebounds.
Up next
Boston is back in action on Friday night against the defending NBA champion New York Knicks, who open their season on Tuesday against the 76ers. New York defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
Robinson was a part of that Knicks team.
Tip-off is 7 p.m. ET in Boston at TD Garden.
