The Celtics moved to 7-2 on the year with another convincing win.

The Boston Celtics moved to 7-2 on the season with a blowout victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night in Charlotte.

The 119-80 victory happened in Game 2 of the NBA Cup Group Stage, so the Celtics are 2-0 now in the round robin, and they have two more games to play against the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards. Those games will happen in November.

Once again, Jayson Tatum delivered a solid game for the Celtics, leading the way with 34 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He also went 5-for-8 from 3-point range and 11-of-11 at the foul line.

Tatum's big night included a dominant first quarter, which tied some unique team history, according to ESPN.

Tatum scored or assisted on 30 of Boston's 40 first-quarter points, tying Paul Pierce for the most 15-point quarters in C's history with 106. The Celtics outscored Charlotte 40-20 in the first quarter alone en route to the victory.

Tatum has played in eight of the nine games this season for Boston, and he's averaging nearly 30 ppg. And in the wake of Jaylen Brown being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason, it's important to see that Tatum can carry the load offensively. So far he has done just that.

And anytime you can join Pierce in team history, you've done something right.

About Paul Pierce

A 19-year veteran, Pierce spent 15 years with the Celtics, serving as a key part of the championship team in 2007-08. In total, he was a 10-time All-Star, a four-time All-NBA selection, and the NBA Finals MVP in that '08 season.

He averaged 19.7 ppg for his career while also shooting 44.5 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from three-point range.

Drafted No. 10 overall in the 1998 NBA Draft out of Kansas, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

In addition to Boston, he played for the Brooklyn Nets, Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers. Ironically, the trade that sent him to Brooklyn helped the Celtics net the draft picks that became both Tatum and Brown.

Tatum was selected in 2017 while Brown was taken the year prior.

Up next for Boston

The Celtics will be back in action again on Sunday when they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks, who are just 1-7 on the young season.

This will be a road test for Boston, and they are 2-2 on the road this season.

Tip-off time is set for 8 p.m. ET.
