Appearing on 98.5 the Sports Hub in Boston on Thursday, Mazzulla took calls from listeners.

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla shared a hilarious moment with a Celtics fan during an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston on Thursday afternoon.

Appearing on the "Zolak and Bertrand" Show as he does weekly, Mazzulla implored the hosts to take calls from listeners, ensuring that he could handle it. Well, what ensued was the fan telling Mazzulla that he didn't like the way he handled the media when he first got to Boston, that he didn't appreciate this short responses to questions, and that he also doesn't like the way that Jayson Tatum handles end-of-half scenarios.

To Mazzulla's credit, he certainly did handle everything well, even agreeing with the listener that he has had to get better with the media. He also gave some fascinating insight to why he answers questions the way he does and what goals he's trying to achieve when he answers them.

He did not answer the question about Tatum's end-of-half execution, at least in the part of the clip we saw.

The Mazzulla file

A former college player at West Virginia, Mazzulla is still just 38 years old. He served as an assistant coach for the Celtics from 2019-22 before getting thrust into the spotlight in the wake of former head coach Ime Udoka being let go.

In four seasons as Boston's head coach, he's gone 328-238 (72.6 winning percentage). He's been to the playoffs all four years, including winning the NBA title in 2023-24.

Last season, playing largely without Tatum, the Celtics went 56-26 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Of course, they were upset in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers will represent one of the biggest obstacles for the Celtics this season and this season will also represent a new on-court challenge for Mazzulla, as he'll have to coach for the first time without Jaylen Brown, who was traded to the 76ers this July.

Navigating the fan and media reaction to the trade will be a new test as well. However, crisis management seems to be a specialty of his. He handled taking over for Udoka well, he handled the reaction to trades of Marcus Smart, Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday well too. But, to his point, maybe he wasn't always good at it. After all, he's had to work on the media side of things.

The C's will finish the preseason on Friday night against the 76ers before opening up the regular season on Tuesday against the Detroit Pistons.
