Saturday was a big day for Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy, who had the court named after him at the College of the Holy Cross, his alma mater.
As noted by WCVB Television:
The court at the Hart Center Arena at the Luth Athletic Complex will be permanently known as Bob Cousy ’50 Court, thanks to a generous gift made in his honor, the college first announced last year.
Cousy spent four years playing at Holy Cross, helping them win the NCAA title in 1946-1947. He averaged 7.6 ppg as a freshman and then jumped up to 16.2 as a sophomore, 17.8 as a junior and 19.4 as a senior. Additionally, he went to two more NCAA Tournaments and was named a first-team All-America in 1949-50, his senior campaign.
Once he was done in college, he was the No. 4 pick in the 1950 NBA Draft of the Celtics.
With the Celtics, Cousy became a legend. One of the best players in team history, he spent 13 years with Boston, amassing 13 All-Star Game appearances, 12 All-NBA selections and two All-Star Game MVPs.
He won six NBA titles with the C's and was also MVP in 1956-57. A member of the NBA 75th Anniversary team, he averaged 18.4 ppg and 7.5 assists. He led the league in total assists in eight different seasons.
He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971, nearly immediately after he quit playing for good. Ironically, Cousy retired after the 1962-63 season, took six seasons off and then came back for seven games with the Cincinnati Royals. He was also the head coach of the Royals.
Cousy spent five seasons as head coach of the Royals and Kansas City-Omaha Kings who are now the Sacramento Kings. He went 141-207 in that tenure, winning a season-best 36 games twice.
The C's are in action on Sunday afternoon taking on the New York Knicks. Boston enters play at 34-18 while New York is 33-19. The C's are in second place in the Eastern Conference while New York is in third. Both teams are chasing the Detroit Pistons.
Boston will have one more game left in the first half of the season following Sunday: They'll take on Chicago on Feb. 11 before pausing for the All-Star break.
