The Kawhi Leonard-to-Toronto deal has happened, meaning the Celtics officially have even more competition in a suddenly-loaded Eastern Conference.
Once the Kawhi Leonard/Los Angeles Clippers/Aspiration investigation was done and punishments were handed down, we all expected the Toronto Raptors to formally acquire Leonard from the Clippers.
On Monday, the trade officially went down, as reported by Shams Charania of ESPN. The Raptors are getting Leonard, while the Clippers are getting Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round picks.
Frankly, it seems like two things are true with regards to how this deal impacts the Boston Celtics.
1) The Raptors made in-roads in the short term, making life more difficult for the Celtics.
2) That's a lot to give up, and Toronto seems to have gotten worse in the long term, which will benefit the Celtics down the road.
About Leonard
A 14-year veteran out of San Diego State, Leonard has played for the San Antonio Spurs, Raptors and Clippers. He helped the Raptors win their only title in 2018-19 and will return back to the city to try to do it again. Quiet, mercurial and injured often throughout his career, Leonard is a very impactful player - when he's on the floor.
He hasn't played 70 games in a season since 2016-17 and has played 65 or more only twice since then. Now 35 years old, he finished seventh in the NBA MVP voting a year ago after averaging 27.9 ppg. He's also an impactful defender who has made seven All-Defensive teams.

Toronto went 46-36 last season, advancing to the playoffs and losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. So, they were already good, and with Leonard they have a chance to be better, but again, there's a price to pay for his services.
About Ingram
A 29-year-old who was a former first-round pick from Duke, Ingram has already played 10 years for the Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Raptors. He's averaged 19.8 ppg for his career and just averaged 21.5 last season for Toronto.
So, substituting him out for Leonard is likely an upgrade, but not by much - especially when you factor in the durability questions for Leonard. Ingram played 77 games last season.
As for Gradey Dick
The No. 13 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft out of Kansas, he averaged six points a game last season, but he still has some long-term upside that Leonard doesn't have anymore.
Up next for the Celtics
Boston will begin training camp on Sept. 29.
