After going 4-0 in the preseason, the Celtics are readying for the regular season.
After going 4-0 in the preseason, the Boston Celtics are now readying for the regular season, which begins on Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons.
In preparation for the regular season, the Celtics are setting their roster, and according to Michael Scotto, they are keeping Devin Carter on a two-way contract.
Here's what you need to know.
What is a two-way contract?
1) As noted by the G-League, NBA teams can keep up to three players on two-way contracts.
2) Players who are signed to two-way deals can play up to 50 games on the parent NBA team, and they can play otherwise on the G-League roster.
3) If a player is on a two-way contract, they cannot play in the NBA Playoffs. However, a two-way contract can convert to a standard contract if the team wants, which would make a player playoff eligible.
The Devin Carter file
Still just 24 years old, Carter played his college basketball at South Carolina and Providence. A Florida native, he played his high school basketball in New Hampshire, so he certainly has familiarity with New England.
Listed at 6-foot-2, he was the No. 13 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Providence. He's played in 74 games for the Sacramento Kings over the last two years, starting 12 of them. He had been traded to Atlanta earlier this offseason, but they waived him and made him a free agent. That's when the Celtics stepped in to pick him up.
Boston Celtics guard Devin Carter (99) shoots a three point shot over Cleveland Cavaliers guard Sam Merrill (5) during the first half of preseason game at Rocket Arena. David Dermer-Imagn ImagesCarter averaged 8.9 ppg a year ago while shooting 41.4 percent from the floor. He actually shot greater than 50 percent from two-point range, but he was just 26.3 percent from 3-point range.
He played in only one preseason game this season, which was the first one. He was listed as out with illness in multiple of the remaining three. He scored 17 points in the opener against the Cavaliers, also pulling down five rebounds and dishing out three assists. He played 25 minutes in that game.
Up next for Boston
The Celtics open up the regular season on Tuesday against the Pistons, who earned the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs a year ago. Boston was the No. 2 seed, but life will certainly be different without Jaylen Brown.
However, after a 4-0 preseason, there is plenty of optimism surrounding Joe Mazzulla's team heading into the new year.
