The Minnesota Timberwolves are set to honor Kevin Garnett after a game against Boston in February.
On Saturday night, former Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, with former Celtics Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen alongside him, as the trio will introduce their old coach.
And on Feb. 28, 2027, Garnett will be in the midst of the Celtics again, but this time in Minnesota.
On Friday, the Minnesota Timberwolves announced that they will retire Kevin Garnett's iconic No. 21 on that date following a game against the Celtics. It seems like a nice gesture on Minnesota's part to allow Garnett an opportunity to have this moment with Boston in attendance.
Of course, Timberwolves fans will want his speech and memories to focus solely on his time in the Twin Cities, so he needs to not be too happy have the Celtics in attendance.
About Garnett
Now 50 years old, Garnett took the league by storm when he entered it out of high school in 1995. The No. 5 overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft of Minnesota, he spent the first 12 years of his career with the Wolves before being traded in the offseason leading into the 2007-08 campaign.
That season, the Celtics also acquired Allen and won the NBA title after going 66-16 in the regular season. In total, Garnett spent six seasons with the Celtics, playing in 396 regular season games and averaging 15.7 ppg and 8.3 rebounds. He was the league's Defensive Player of the Year winner in 2007-08 and also made five All-Star Games with the Celtics.
He, Pierce and Allen helped usher in the "Big 3" era of the NBA, which is arguably a bigger legacy than the title that the team won together.
Boston ended up trading him to Brooklyn before the 2013 season, netting a bevy of draft picks that ultimately turned into Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum both.
The Celtics, of course, won the NBA title with Brown and Tatum in 2023-24. Brown was named the MVP of the Finals and was traded this past July to the Philadelphia 76ers.
As for the Celtics schedule as a whole
The full NBA schedule came out on Thursday afternoon and the C's will open up the league calendar on Oct. 20 at Detroit. We've identified five must-watch games for fans, including the opener.
Perhaps this Garnett celebration needs to be added to the list as well.
