Hayden Gray was with the Utah Jazz last season, but he was previously with the C's organization.
According to a report from HoopsHype, the Boston Celtics have signed guard Hayden Gray in a pre-training camp deal.
Training camp begins on Tuesday and this move follows the recent move to sign former Sacramento Kings guard Devin Carter, who is a former NBA lottery pick.
Gray, 23, is a California native who played his college basketball at UC San Diego. Last year, he appeared in one game in the NBA with the Utah Jazz, playing 25 minutes and scoring six points. He's a 6-foot-4 guard.
That's obviously not enough of a sample size to say that he'll be able to help the Celtics, but it's always interesting to see who gets brought into training camp and who can make things happen during the preseason. Those end-of-roster battles are always fun to watch materialize.
The Celtics will play four preseason games before the season opener on Oct. 20 against the Detroit Pistons, so it's likely that we'll see a good bit of Gray.
And the organization does already know Gray a bit, as he played 13 games with the G-League's Maine Celtics last season before ending up in Utah. In those 13 games, he averaged 8.3 ppg in nearly 23 minutes of action. Gray was with the Summer League Celtics in 2025 before that, so again, the organization does have a knowledge of his game.
About Gray in college
After two years at Azusa Pacific, Gray played two years with UC San Diego, starting all 68 games he played in. He led the Big West in steals (3.1) as a senior and also averaged 10.1 ppg over the two years. He shot 39.5 percent from three-point range for his career and dished out 3.3 assists.
He helped UC San Diego to the NCAA Tournament in 2025.

The Celtics will play four preseason games, with two coming at home and two coming on the road. They'll open up the preseason slate on Oct. 8 at the Cleveland Cavaliers before hosting Philadelphia on the 10th. They'll then host Charlotte on the 14th before traveling to Philadelphia on Friday, Oct. 17. That will end the preseason and the C's will embark on the new campaign.
Those games against Philadelphia should be very interesting considering it will be the first chance for Celtics fans to see Jaylen Brown in a 76ers jersey. Brown was traded to the 76ers this summer for a package headlined by Paul George and two future draft picks.
