The reports are out that the C's might be one of the suitors for Giannis, but can they even make it happen?

Recently, the Boston Celtics were named as one of the potential suitors for Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. The Milwaukee Bucks superstar has one more guaranteed year left on his contract, with a player option for a second, and he comes with a price tag of nearly $60 million in that season.

While most Celtics fans would undoubtedly like the team to make a run at the All-NBA player, the question remains: Could they even do it?

Let's take a look at some of the information here:

The money

The 31-year-old is slated to make more than $58 million next season and he has a player option that rises to more than $62 million in 2027-28. If the Celtics were to acquire him, they'd have to be able to send out close to matching salaries in order to make the deal happen.

The obvious pathway

We're using the Spotrac trade machine for this exercise:

1) The Celtics could trade Jayson Tatum to Milwaukee in this deal, as the two have matching salaries for next season. It's highly doubtful that the C's would want to do this, but the math checks out.

2) The C's could also send Jaylen Brown to the Bucks in this move, as he's making just over $57 million. Again, it's unlikely that Boston would want to move the younger Brown for an older player with less years of team control, but again, the math works. Pairing Giannis with Tatum would give the Celtics a solid inside-out combo, as opposed to two guard-forward players.

The less obvious pathways

Assuming you don't want to move Tatum or Brown, then Celtics have to get much more creative and start removing larger portions of the roster.

Boston would likely have to start with Derrick White, who is making just over $30 million, and then go from there. Even sending Sam Hauser and his nearly $11 million deal isn't enough. Only if they want to throw in Payton Pritchard and his nearly $8 million does the math add up.

Does Boston really want to send that trio out for Giannis. Even as good as he is, is that much sacrifice really worth it for a year?

If you don't want to move Pritchard, now you're talking about White, Hauser and multiple role players to make the deal work. That too, seems unlikely.

The general thought process here

As they hone in on the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics are clearly a good team and clearly a team that can compete for a championship as long as Tatum and Brown are together and healthy. There are moves to be made, but this one seems too complex and too unncessary.

Antetokounmpo is a generational player, but he's no longer worth the generational cost, and this doesn't even begin to mention the draft picks that Milwaukee will want to actually start the process of getting younger.
