Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown was not happy after losing to the lowly Brooklyn Nets Friday night at the TD Garden. He lambasted his team in the post-game press conference and his teammates got the message loud and clear.
"That loss was unacceptable against Brooklyn," Brown told NBC Sports Boston's Abby Chin after the game. "I felt like we came out better today."
Boston responded with its highest scoring output of the season.
Behind 35 points from Brown, the Celtics defeated the Orlando Magic Sunday, 138-129. They earned the win despite being outscored 40-28 in the fourth quarter. The Celtics led the Magic by as much as 26 points in the third quarter, but the Magic kept coming back.
Anfernee Simons added 23 points for the Celtics to go with his five rebounds and two assists. Payton Pritchard scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and had eight assists for Boston. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was impressed with Simons effort.
"I think he is just more comfortable coming off the bench and being aggressive right away," Mazzulla said after the game.
The Magic were led by Jett Howard who scored 30 points and pulled down seven rebounds while dishing out three assists. Jase Richardson and Desmond Bane each contributed 18 points in the loss. Orlando had six players in double-digit scoring.
Despite the loss, Orlando played Boston tough, especially in the fourth quarter. They were aggressive on the boards and refused to give in.
The Celtics exploded in the second quarter as they were firing on all cylinders. They connected on 18 of 22 shots from the field and turned what was a five-point advantage, to a 80-57 lead at the intermission. Pritchard ignited the explosion with a steal, a layup and a triple which propelled the Celtics to a 48-point quarter.
Boston lost the rebounding battle 56-43, and only had seven offensive rebounds, which translated into 10 second-chance points. By contrast, the Magic had 18 offensive rebounds and earned 21 second-chance points. It was the Magic attacking the offensive glass and getting the easy put-backs that kept them hanging around.
The Celtics outscored the Magic when it came to points off of turnovers. They won that category by a margin of 14-5. The Celtics only had five turnovers the entire game. The Magic played a fairly clean game as they only had eight turnovers.
The game marked the return of Magic coach Jamahi Mosley, who fell ill in the second half of the game with the New York Knicks Saturday. He missed the balance of the Knicks game and was questionable to take the bench Sunday.
The Celtics will return to action Wednesday night when they host the Detroit Pistons.
