Despite getting 23 points from Jaylen Brown and 18 points from Sam Hauser, the Boston Celtics lost to the New York Knicks Friday night 105-95 at Madison Square Garden.
The loss drops the Celtics to 0-2 on the season. New York improves to 2-0 as they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday night.
The Knicks were led by Jalen Brunson who dropped 31 points on the Celtics to go with his five assists. Karl-Anthony Towns added 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds on a night that the Knicks would outrebound the Celtics 65-43.
Boston started the game off with three turnovers in the first 2:20 of the game, which led to a 7-0 Knicks run. Boston went on an 8-0 run of their own and led at the end of the first quarter 30-22.
That is when the bottom fell out on the Celtics.
The Knicks outscored the Celtics 42-14 in the second quarter and led by 20 at the halftime intermission. New York had an 11-0 run to take the lead. Hauser then tied it up with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. That led to another large Knicks run, a 14-0 run where Brunson hit two 3-balls to enhance the Knicks lead.
The Celtics would find some defense in the early part of the third quarter, but it did not last long. They cut the lead to 10 at 91-81, but could not get much closer than that. Midway through the third quarter, the Celtics were 4-of-19 from 3-point land, not including Hauser, who was formidable as he hit six from downtown by himself.
The glass is where the Celtics could not compete. The Knicks won the offensive glass battle 21-8, which created 21 second-chance points. The Celtics could only muster seven on their side of the glass.
New York also won the battle of getting to the foul line. They went to the line 25 times and converted 22 of their shots. Boston was 10-of-15 from the line on the evening.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was not pleased with Boston's performance, to say the least. He thinks everyone needs to be held accountable and play smarter.
"Tonight we had a miscommunication on a play that we walked through. We had a miscommunication on a read offensively. We can control those things regardless of if you're a rookie or a 12-year veteran," Mazzulla said after the game. "Those are the things. So, it's holding accountable to the things we can control and that's a high, high standard. To me, you can't budge on that.
"They're going to make mistakes and that's OK," Mazzulla continued. "But they've got to be mistakes out of aggression and mistakes of opportunity not mistakes of not playing hard. I thought the second quarter was a little bit of the mistakes of aggression, but I thought we got outplayed in that quarter and we just can't get outplayed."
The Celtics will next play at the Detroit Pistons on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m..
