Rivers’ 2008 title run cements legacy as Celtics icon in Hall of Fame class

For a generation of Celtics fans, the 2008 banner doesn’t hang without Doc Rivers.

And now, his place in basketball history is official.

Rivers has been selected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026, a fitting honor for a coach whose Boston tenure reshaped the franchise and delivered, arguably, its most defining modern moments.

The induction ceremony is set for August in Springfield, Massachusetts, just a short drive from where his legacy still resonates.

When Rivers arrived in Boston in 2004, the Celtics were searching for direction.

By 2008, they were champions.

The transformation came quickly once the front office paired Paul Pierce with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, forming the iconic Big Three.

Rivers was tasked with turning that talent into a team, and he delivered.

He guided Boston to a 66-win season and a championship run that culminated in a six-game Finals victory over the Lakers.

That title, the franchise’s 17th, remains the defining achievement of Rivers’ coaching career.

Across nine seasons in Boston (2004-13), Rivers made the playoffs seven times and helped establish a culture built on defense, accountability, and veteran leadership. The Celtics returned to the Finals in 2010 and remained contenders throughout his tenure, with many pointing to injuries - particularly Garnett’s in 2009 - as the biggest obstacle to adding another banner.

Rivers’ resume extends well beyond Boston.

With over 1,100 career wins, he ranks among the most accomplished coaches in NBA history and was named to the league’s Top 15 coaches of all time during its 75th anniversary celebration.

His stops with the Magic (1999-2003), Clippers (2013-20), 76ers (2020-23), and now the Bucks (2024-present) have added longevity to his career, even if postseason success proved more elusive outside of Boston.

Still, in New England, the legacy is clear.

Rivers wasn’t just the coach of a championship team, he was the voice and presence that brought it together.

Ubuntu.

He headlines a 2026 Hall of Fame class that also includes Candace Parker, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Elena Delle Donne, among others.

But for Celtics fans, this class will always start with Doc.
