If the C's officially close the book on the Jaylen Brown-era, what would the offensive plan be?

With just two days to go until the start of NBA Free Agency, the rumors continue to circulate around Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.

The C's have reportedly been willing to include Brown in trades this offseason, and did offer him up for Giannis Antetokounmpo before he was traded to the Miami Heat. According to new reports, multiple teams remain interested in acquiring him from Boston.

Brown, 29, averaged 28.7 ppg this past season, carrying the Celtics to a 56-26 record and a No. 2 seed in the NBA's Eastern Conference.

If the Celtics trade him, they'll be closing the book on the Brown-Jayson Tatum era, which they've had in place for nine seasons.

Together, Brown and Tatum have made the playoffs nine times and been to the NBA Finals twice. The duo won the title in 2023-24. Brown is a five-time All-Star and a two-time All-NBA selection. He finished sixth in the MVP voting this season.

There are many questions about this whole situation: How did the Celtics come to the point of being willing to move Brown? How does Brown feel about everything? Could the two sides reconcile and move forward together? And also specifically, how would the Celtics play, stylistically, if Brown were not there?

The clear idea

Right now, the Celtics are a very perimeter-oriented team. Brown, Tatum, Payton Pritchard and Derrick White shoot a ton of 3-pointers and leave little room for a big man to have a real role.

If Brown were gone, the C's could become a little more diverse. Tatum would be the team's main wing player, with both guards remaining in the back court. There would be room for Luka Garza to potentially have more of a role inside, as well as first-round draft pick Chris Cenac Jr.

The C's would utilize a more inside-out approach under this plan and not become quite as predictable, something that Brad Stevens said he wanted after the playoff elimination.

Elsewhere for the Celtics

Reports circulated on Saturday that the C's are re-signing guard Ron Harper Jr. to a three-year deal worth $9 million.

The son of former Chicago Bulls guard Ron Harper Sr., Harper Jr. is a four-year veteran of the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons and Celtics. He had played in just 11 games in three seasons prior to getting to Boston, but he found himself a bigger role with the Celtics, playing in 29 games and starting three of them in 2025-26. He averaged 4.2 ppg and 1.7 rebounds. At 6-foot-5, he should get more opportunities to help in the C's backcourt, potentially alleviating stress on Payton Pritchard and Derrick White.

Harper also saw action in six of the seven playoff games for the C's this year. He averaged 1.8 ppg in 4.2 minutes of action.
